This hidden gem is perfect for people who want a relaxing holiday without being surrounded by loads of other tourists.
This place, a beautiful Greek island full of nature, quiet villages, and culture, has been named one of Europe’s “best-kept travel secrets” by Geo Magazine. It’s found in the southeast Aegean Sea, between Crete and Rhodes.
The island is known for its lovely beaches and white-painted houses, and it’s extra special because it hasn’t been overrun by big crowds. You can hike, swim in clear blue waters, and enjoy peaceful spots all around.

There are over 50 beaches on the island, and many are quiet and peaceful. Two of the most popular ones are Apella Beach, with its bright blue sea and green hills, and Kira Panagia Beach, with golden sand and a red-roofed church nearby.
One visitor shared their thoughts about Apella Beach on TripAdvisor: “It’s the most beautiful beach in Karpathos. You can get there easily by scooter. After a few turns on the road, you reach steps that lead to an amazing view. The sea is super clear, and the beach has pebbles.
“There are trees and rocks behind you for shade later in the day. Take your own food and water. There are cheap umbrellas, a changing cabin, and not much else—but it’s fantastic!”
The village of Olympos is also a must-see. It has about 400 people and sits 58 km away from the main town, Pigadia. The village website says the homes are built into the green hills and keep their old traditional look.

Olympos feels like a living museum, especially when low clouds roll in and surround the village. One tourist said on TripAdvisor: “You really have to see Olympos if you’re in Karpathos.”
If you enjoy outdoor sports, Karpathos is great for windsurfing, especially in Afiartes, where the winds are perfect.
There are also hiking paths all over the island. These trails take you through different landscapes and give you amazing views of the Aegean Sea.
You’ll find lots of places to stay on the island—from small family-run guesthouses to bigger, modern hotels—so there’s something for everyone’s taste and budget.
