The secluded beach in Greece crowned as having the "whitest sand" in Europe

A beach in Europe has been recognised for having some of the "whitest sand in the world," and it's just a short flight from the UK.

Experts recently used “colour theory” to identify the world’s brightest sand beaches, and one European gem has made the top of the list.

In a unique study, they analysed Google Maps images of 200 beaches, comparing their RGB colour codes to determine the closest match to pure white sand.

While determining the planet’s exact whitest sand beach is challenging, this study provides beach lovers with a curated guide to some of the best sandy escapes.

Mexico’s Tulum Beach and Anse Source D'Argent in the Seychelles claimed the top two spots, but Marmari Beach on the Greek island of Kos ranked highest in Europe for its dazzling sand.

Marmari Beach is often described as a "hidden gem" by those who visit, offering a pristine stretch along Kos's beautiful coast.

"Marmari Beach in Kos, Greece, ranks third globally, with only a 6.5 difference in sand colour compared to the purest white," stated the CV Villas report.

Located 20 km southwest of Kos Town and just 5 km from Pyli, Marmari Beach invites visitors to soak up the blue Aegean Sea with a view of distant mountains.

During the summer, the beach has sunbeds and umbrellas available for hire, while still providing ample space for those who prefer to spread out a towel on the sand.

The nearby village of Marmari is a short walk from the beach, featuring charming tavernas and shops. One Tripadvisor reviewer shared, “Incredible beach. Hidden gem. Sandy and kid-friendly. Great hotel on the beach with a restaurant.”

Another visitor commented on the warmer water at Marmari, saying, "A lovely, mostly sandy beach with gentle waves and warmer water than Kos’s other side. We parked near Ria’s beach, where sunbeds were comfy and only €5 each!”

Flights from the UK to Kos are typically under four hours, though times vary by departure airport.
