Holiday hotspot Spain is set to make hotels pay more due to increased tourism in 2025, and many hotel owners are not pleased with this upcoming change.
UK tourists may see higher costs when visiting Spain in 2025, as hotels will be required to cover additional charges linked to tourism growth. This move has upset many hoteliers, who feel they’ll be forced to pay more than ever.
In Majorca, water rates for hotels are set to increase. This means hotel owners will face higher costs, and some in the industry believe the government has made decisions before fully considering the impact of the sustainability pact.
President Prohens announced this water rate increase during a general policy debate in parliament, as reported by the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
The announcement, made two weeks ago, has been a major point of concern for hotel owners.
This change is one of three issues causing frustration among hoteliers, who feel let down by the Partido Popular, a political party they once viewed as allies.
In her statement, Prohens explained: "Water is a valuable resource. The goal is for those who use more to pay more, and to encourage people to save."
She also hinted that this measure would be part of the new decree aimed at tackling tourist overcrowding, which is expected to be finalised and presented in February next year.
Hotel managers responded by calling the increase for large consumers "poorly thought out."
They argued that larger hotels are already much more efficient in managing their water use than smaller establishments.
They believe that all consumers should be encouraged to use water responsibly, and claim that lowering rates for small users could discourage efficient use across the board.
