Italy’s most ‘overlooked’ city is full of romance and home to amazing restaurants

If you look beyond Italy’s most popular cities, you might be surprised to discover a lively cultural scene up in the north.

This hidden gem is often skipped in favour of bigger cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice, which makes it a hidden gem for travellers who want a more relaxed and authentic Italian trip.

With its small, walkable old town, historic charm, and loads of traditional trattorias serving local dishes, this place is perfect for anyone wanting to escape the busy tourist crowds.

This northern Italian city is full of romance, history, and tradition. One of the best things about Verona is how easy it is to walk around — its quiet cobbled streets and open squares are simple to explore, but many people don’t give themselves enough time to enjoy it all.

Tourist Italy said: “If you're wondering how many days to spend in Verona, we’d say at least two. You could easily spend a week wandering the cobbled streets and soaking up the culture and romance.”

Verona is most famous as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but there’s so much more to the city than that.

You can visit Juliet’s House, Casa di Giulietta, see the famous balcony, and go inside the building. Just around the corner is Piazza delle Erbe, a lively square with cafés, shops, and the old Via Cappello.

Piazza delle Erbe used to be a Roman marketplace and is now one of many lovely spots in the city to relax and explore.

You can also visit the amazing Arena di Verona, a huge Roman amphitheatre that still hosts big opera shows today — a real link to the city’s Roman history.

And Verona isn’t just about history. Chef Theo Randall even called it “Italy’s most underrated foodie city” on The Go-To Podcast.
