Europe’s largest canyon, and one of the world’s most beautiful, is just a two-hour drive from a major city

If white-water rapids, towering cliffs, and water with the brightest blue hue you’ll ever see sounds exciting, then this European paradise is a must-visit.

Located only a few hours north of the French Riviera is one of Europe’s most beautiful river canyons, with vibrant turquoise water that’s a true feast for the eyes.

Verdon Gorge was shaped by the Verdon River and is found in southeastern France.

This river canyon spans over 15 miles in length and reaches depths of 700 metres, making it a fantastic addition to any southern France itinerary.

To experience the turquoise-green water, you can rent a kayak or electric boat.

Its beauty isn’t only enjoyed on the water, though; it’s also a favourite among skilled climbers thanks to its limestone walls, which rise hundreds of metres high.

Glacial runoff contributes to the gorge’s unique turquoise tone, with countless tourists visiting to admire its stunning beauty.

It’s easily reachable by car, about a two-hour drive from Marseille or Aix, or 2.5 hours from Nice. Plus, it’s the largest canyon in Europe.

Popular nearby hikes include Le sentier du Bastidon, Le sentier de Martel, Le belvédère de Rancoumas par le pont de Tusset, and Le sentier de l’Imbut.

The Pont du Galetas bridge offers the most photographed view in the gorge, with boats scattered below.

For those who want to swim, there are several small beaches along the river, and Plage de Chabassol is a top favourite.

Boat rentals can be found on both sides of Pont du Galetas, with kayaks at about €18 for an hour or electric boats around €35.

It’s a good idea to plan ahead if you want to rent a boat, as they tend to book up early each day.
